Words for Whitman
The 2026 Read-A-Thon has ended, and we hope readers of every age will join us when it returns in 2027. Between those county-wide celebrations, Words for Whitman will keep supporting literacy work throughout Whitman County.
Donations to this project go directly to United Way of Whitman County specifically to support local children enrolled in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and help them receive a book in the mail each month.

Great Zucchini Race & Squash Hunger Baking Contest

Judging begins at noon, the Free Community Hub Pantry dedication is at 1:30 p.m., and the auction benefiting local food banks and pantries begins at 2 p.m. Baking entries may also be dropped off Friday, Sept. 25, from 7–10 p.m.

Whitman County Granges played on the fair’s “Hats Off to America” theme with mosaics celebrating farmers, patriotism, community, and the strength found in our differences.

New red popcorn appeared in several booths, while a “blue” popcorn created the field of stars on Pine Grove’s American flag. Organizers acknowledge that it is not a true blue and hope to find elusive heirloom Utrecht Blue wheat, native to the Netherlands, for special details in future displays.
With the exception of rice, the grains and locally raised legumes used in the mosaics come from the Palouse. The working palette includes canola; hard red and soft white wheat; yellow and red popcorn; Red Chief and common brown lentils; whole, split, and cracked green and yellow peas; and garbanzo beans.
Help continue the tradition. Organizers welcome people interested in designing or installing next year’s fair displays.

Whitman County Pomona Grange No. 2 connects six local Granges in Whitman County and Rimrock Grange in Adams County so members can share ideas, coordinate service, strengthen leadership, and build friendships across communities. Each local Grange keeps its own identity and priorities while gaining partners for work that reaches farther.
Grange membership is open to people who care about agriculture and rural life as producers or consumers. Our work welcomes many ages, backgrounds, skills, and ways of contributing.

Legacy Family recognition
Congratulations to the Miller/Webb family.
Established by the National Grange, the Legacy Family program honors families with five or more consecutive generations of Grange membership.
In June, the Miller/Webb family was recognized during the annual State Grange convention as a six-generation Grange Legacy Family. Several living members attended the Mount Vernon event, while others joined via Zoom, including Irene Miller Tripp.
The Washington State Grange also recently recognized Miller Tripp of Newaukum Grange No. 198 for 90 years of consecutive membership. She joined in 1936. The State Grange says it believes this is the first 90-year consecutive-membership award it has presented in Washington.
